Just as people appear in your buddy list, you can appear in their buddy lists. This way, others can send you an instant message. All they need to know is your Mac.com email address or your AIM screen name.
Others will know whether they can send you a message by looking at your status. You can easily set your status in the Buddy List window or by using the iChat icon in the menu bar. When you want to be available to receive messages, set your status to Available. When you leave your Mac, or simply don’t want to be disturbed, set your status to Away. When your status is Away, buddies can still send you messages, but at least they’ll know that they probably won’t get an instant response.
