If you use a cable or DSL modem for high-speed Internet access, you need to configure your Mac to correctly communicate with the modem, which then connects you to the Internet. Where do you get these settings? Start by checking with the company that provides your Internet service. They’ll give you the information you need to enter in the Network pane of System Preferences. All computers connected to the Internet have their own address (known as an IP or network address). This unique number allows computers to communicate with other personal computers and servers on the Internet. Depending on how your Internet service provider has their network configured, you may need to manually enter the IP address, or have it automatically assigned by the Internet service provider.
