When you open an application, its icon appears in the Dock. The icon bounces while the application is opening, and a small black triangle appears below the icon once the application is open.

In the Dock, you’ll find some commonly used applications (Internet Explorer, Mail, and so on). You can easily open them with one click. You can then use the Dock to switch between open applications.
